dB-S is a flexible de-essing plugin, designed to remove the sibilant "ssssss", "shhhhh", and explosive "ttttt" sounds in a vocal track or mix. It consists of a selective narrowband filter to detect the sibilant sounds in a vocal, a 3-mode compressor to remove the sibilant frequencies from the vocal, and an intuitive interface to show you what's going on! dB-S is effective at reducing sibilance in both raw vocal tracks AND final mixes. Using dB-S is a two-stage task.
general controls
display The red graph shows the detect circuit filter response. The red meter shows the output of this filter. You should aim to see the red meter peaking during the sibilant vocal phrases, and reading a low value during the normal vocals. The blue graph shows the frequency spectrum of the reduce circuit. The blue meter shows the actual amount of reduction currently being applied. You should aim to see the blue meter reading a positive value ONLY during the sibilant parts of the vocal. When playing back, the output of the detect circuit is also drawn on the graph itself. This is useful for visually setting up the reduce amount parameter detect freq / width Sets up the frequency response of the detect circuit. detect monitor This button lets you listen to the output of the detect circuit. It helps you to tune the detect circuit into your vocal. reduce freq Sets up the frequency for the lowpass or narrowband de-ess modes. (Disabled for wideband mode) reduce width Sets up the width of the narrowband mode. (Disabled for wideband & lowpass modes) reduce amount Sets the amount of de-essing to be applied. (Actually, sets the threshold of the compressor circuit) You can set the amount visually by watching the realtime detect signal on the graph. Adjust amount so the detect signal just crosses over the blue reduce graph. At this point, you will see the reduce meter start to kick in. reduce mode (wideband / narrowband / lowpass) Wideband mode reduces ALL frequencies equally - in other words, this is like a dynamic volume control. When the detect circuit hears sibilance, the reduce circuit dips the volume of the vocal. (This mode is only used to de-ess raw vocal tracks. It's no use for final mixes or sub-mixes) Narrowband mode reduces only a band of frequencies (as shown by the blue reduce graph). This mode offers fine control over the precise amount and type of de-essing, while leaving the lows & highs of the vocal or mix intact. This mode is excellent for de-essing a stereo mix. Lowpass mode reduces all frequencies above the reduce freq (as shown on the blue graph). This mode generally provides the most transparent and pleasing de-essing effect for the majority of vocals. bypass Switches off the plugin. But you probably knew that :-) Useful for doing A/B comparisons between the original & processed audio, particularly if your sequencer or editor doesn't have its own effect bypass button.
